THE EXHIBITION
Reflecting on our collective experience of living through a pandemic and responding to this critical moment of social awakening, Tarot in Pandemic and Revolution unites 62 visual artists and poets from across the San Francisco Bay Area in a unique card deck created by Adrián Arias in collaboration with Baldocchi Projects and published by Oakland-based nonprofit publisher Nomadic Press.
Curated by multidisciplinary artist and activist Adrián, the original artwork that provided the imagery in this visionary concept of tarot cards will be on display for the first time at Community Arts Stabilization Trust’s (CAST) space, 447 Minna.
Inspired by Arias’ lucid dream of a fortune teller and cards embellished with images of viruses, masks, Black Lives Matter marches, and protests, the deck artwork was created in 2020 and later published in December 2021. Over 60 internationally-recognized visual artists, writers, and poets with deep roots across the San Francisco Bay Area spanning three generations participated in the project.
This 81-piece exhibition highlights the art behind the unique card deck along with each card’s corresponding poem.
Capturing a moment in history unlike any other, this collaboration brings together award-winning poet laureates, novelists, authors, muralists, painters, graphic artists, performance artists, musicians, and dancers, each committed to social, environmental, food, public health, and climate justice.
Just as the tarot invites you to seek answers, alternatives and suggestions, we invite you to find resolve and inspiration in this immersive multi-layered, multidisciplinary transformation of 447 Minna.
“This deck is a bold expression of hope, resilience, resistance, and the courage to continue forging a path to justice and love.”
